FAQs
How many cows can I trim with an Aluminum wheel vs. a Titanium wheel?
The inserts determine how many cows can be trimmed, not the wheel itself. The wheel material affects total wheel lifespan — an aluminum wheel may need replacing after 12-24 months of use, while a titanium wheel can last ~3-5 years. Your actual cow count per wheel depends heavily on workload and conditions.
What is the difference between "open" and "closed"?
This refers to the wheel body design. An open wheel has gaps/spaces on the edge of the wheel at the insert pocket, allowing debris to clear more easily. A closed wheel has a more solid profile which allows the wheel to run on the edge without cutting.
What is the RimCut profile and how is it different?
The RimCut features a 180-degree cutting surface — the most aggressive in Trim-Tec's range — designed for both bulk removal and mottling work, with effective contouring capability. It's the newest addition to the lineup and most versatile for varying workloads.
What is your most popular wheel?
The Titanium Titan open wheel
What is your least popular wheel?
The Basic Series Wheel
What's the difference between the Aluminum and Titanium wheel?
Both are made from aircraft-grade materials and perform identically in terms of cutting action. The Titanium version offers a longer average lifespan of about 3-5 years, while the Aluminum version provides an economic solution while delivering the same cutting experience, lasting an average of about 1 to 2 years — with a recommended check at the 1 year mark. Titanium costs more upfront but lasts significantly longer.
How long will each wheel/disc last?
- Aluminum Hog: approximately 1 to 2 years, check at 1 year
- Titanium Hog: approximately 3-5 years
- Aluminum RimCut: approximately 1–2 years; Titanium RimCut: approximately 3-5 years
- Aluminum/Titanium Titan and Shaver II: similar ranges apply depending on conditions. All wheels benefit from regular inspection for wear and damage.
How will I know when my wheel is spent?
The main indicator of a wheel that needs to be retired is its lack of ability to hold an insert in the pocket consistently. What happens is over time the metal between the threads and the outside of the wheel wears done to the point where a screen can’t reliably hold a screw and insert tightly.
Why do the wheels have different numbers of inserts?
Trim-Tec's lineup includes 3-blade (Hog), 6-blade (Titan, RimCut), and 4 blade (Basic) configurations. More blades means more cutting surface, which affects aggressiveness and speed of material removal. The blade count is tied to the intended use case — lighter finishing work vs. heavy-volume trimming. The Shaver II is the only different wheel. It is the least aggressive wheel because of the way the inserts or cutting blades are oriented on the wheel.
What are the pros/cons of having more or fewer inserts?
In general, More inserts = more aggressive cut, faster material removal, ideal for high-volume or tough hooves. Fewer inserts = more control, better for finish work, beginners, or lighter loads.
What is the difference between XDC and XDS inserts?
The XDC is the less aggressive of the two insert options. The XDS has straight corners on the inserts and has slightly more cutting surface and bite . Both can last up to 100 head of cattle per insert before needing to be indexed (rotated), depending on conditions. Choose XDC for a smoother cut and XDS when you need faster, more aggressive material removal.
How many cows can I trim on one set of inserts?
Each insert can last through trimming up to 100 head of cattle before needing to be indexed, depending on conditions. Each pack includes 10 inserts, giving you up to 1,000 head of cattle worth of trimming per package before full replacement.
